Job Description
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Forensic Engineering team in the Greater Toronto Area. This is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial, highly driven person with a well-rounded skill set to join the Forensic Engineering and Equipment Consulting team, whose responsibilities extend beyond those of traditional Mechanical Engineers. The ideal person for this role will need to not only have a strong grasp of Mechanical Engineering but also be flexible and a strategic thinker able to take on a variety of tasks to deliver support on equipment loss assessment matters ranging from desktop reviews to multi-million-dollar, complex technology claims. Job Responsibilities
- Investigate mechanical systems failures and incidents, including review of building codes and industry standards, as well as design, operation and maintenance of the mechanical systems to identify system requirements
- Conduct field inspections and loss analysis, testing, and data collection
- Determine the extent of damage (water, physical, electrical, smoke, etc.) to the mechanical components and advise on repairability of damaged equipment.
- Perform financial analysis of invoices, purchase orders, budgets, schedules, and reports on behalf of clients.
- Analyze relevant information obtained from desk reviews and field assessments of property and equipment to determine Actual Cash Value (ACV), Replacement Cost Value (RCV), and Repair Versus Replacement values
- Prepare comprehensive written reports detailing project scopes, findings obtained from damage assessment and estimates, causation/failure analysis, and test results.
- Collaborate with insureds and vendors to determine optimal damage correction strategies and associated costs.
- Manage multiple project assignments and execute them on time and within budget.
- Conduct research and develop technical topics for publication
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Masters is a plus
- Eligible to become a member of the Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). Having a P. Eng is a plus.
- Recent graduate with 2 to 4 years of experience in the design and operation of mechanical equipment/systems such as Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC-R), Piping, Fire Protection or Transport Systems within the built environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and independent work ability to interpret engineering design, drawings and specifications and armed with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills required to provide forensic engineering and failure analysis services
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to various stakeholders.
- Strong time management and ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Proficiency in using the full suite of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Access, and SharePoint.
- Basic knowledge of using CAD Software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and Revit platform to produce 3D models (involving piping/valves) and drawings (layouts/BOM, P&ID etc); and a willingness to learn additional programs to support the design, drawings, and schedules required for equipment loss assessment.
- Ambitious, self-motivated, hands-on, and team oriented
- Excellent attention to detail and a desire to learn, excel and grow with us and within the profession
- Able to travel to sites when necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- P.Eng in Ontario is preferred
- Involved in installation, inspection repair and maintenance of industrial machinery and equipment used in manufacturing facilities as well as heavy-duty machines used for construction and transportation.
- Experience with inspection, maintenance, failure analysis and loss assessment of mechanical components including but not limited to Steam & Water Boilers & Heat Exchanger Systems, Air- & Water-Cooled Chillers/Cooling Towers, Pressure Vessels, Piping & Insulation Systems, and Refrigeration Systems & Equipment as well as Electro-Mechanical devices used in commercial or industrial facilities
- It is an advantage to be involved in engineering projects and have work experience in the restoration, insurance, and remediation field, with responsibilities for estimating large residential, commercial, and agricultural complex losses.
- Equipment cost estimating experience and carrying industry certifications is a plus.
Physical and Mental Job Qualifications
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel to various project sites and conduct field investigations.
- Must be able to work at heights.
- Must be able to work in hot and cold environments, both indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to periodically access and work on roofs, scaffolds, lifts, and other elevated surfaces and in enclosed spaces (attics, crawlspaces, etc.) with appropriate personal protection.
- Must be able to lift, transport, set up, and utilize an extension ladder to access roofs and other elevated surfaces.
- Physically able to climb, stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time
