We are seeking a Director of Frontend Engineering who brings strong technical depth, product sensibility and leadership maturity. This role is ideal for a player/coach—someone who leads by example, is hands-on when needed and thrives on growing talent while building mission-critical systems. The ideal candidate has extensive cross-platform expertise in React and React Native application development and demonstrates strong project management skills to keep the team on track to deliver high-quality results on ambitious projects. This person will also play a critical role in driving our AI strategy forward across clinical, operational and development applications.

Responsibilities:

    • Lead the migration from native member mobile apps to a unified React Native platform across mobile and web.
    • Architect performant, modular frontend systems that enable AI-driven features like real-time personalization, behavior adaptation and conversational UX.
    • Act as a player/coach, contributing directly to the codebase during key initiatives or technical spikes.
    • Own the frontend engineering for Canvas Medical EMR integration and internal tools that power care delivery, scheduling, messaging and member service coordination.
    • Drive integration strategy to integrate React-based applications across multiple provider types, Medical Assistants and member services personas that orient around the member’s care plan.
    • Collaborate closely with Product, Clinical and Data teams to embed AI-driven clinical decision support and care automation into provider workflows.
    • Deliver integrated member experiences for covered populations that unlock growth from employer, payer and PBM partnerships such as onboarding SSO and stripe payments integrations.
    • Support Marketing and other GTM stakeholders for enhancements on website and other onboarding flows for members and plan sponsors.
    • Build flexible, scalable frameworks for rapid deployment of client-specific configurations that optimize for different populations and business objectives.
    • Drive a unified, scalable design system with tokens, theming, breakpoints and accessibility baked into every layer—from typography and animations to dark/light mode and responsive behavior.
    • Build and maintain a cross-platform component and experience infrastructure that includes loading states, progressive disclosure, A/B testing hooks and performance instrumentation.
    • Partner with design to build design-to-development workflows, including exploration of AI-assisted workflows (e.g., design-to-code translation) to accelerate handoff and reduce friction across product teams.
    • Raise the bar on technical operations: CI/CD, test coverage, incident response, performance monitoring and AI-assisted SDLC/QA practices.
    • Champion best practices in engineering productivity, release management and developer experience.
    • Deliver performant, high-quality features across iOS and Android, optimizing for user experience, maintainability and long-term scalability.
    • Build and lead a team of full-time and contract engineers with strengths across web, mobile and AI-integrated experiences - managing within healthcare compliance and governance regulations.
    • Develop a culture of cross-training, learning and innovation; helping engineers expand into new platforms and technologies including AI agents and copilots.
    • Establish clear career development paths, with an emphasis on growing both IC and tech lead roles.

Qualifications:

    • 8+ years of experience in frontend engineering, with 3+ years leading teams in a high-growth, product-driven environment.
    • Hands-on expertise in React Native, React, TypeScript and mobile/web frontend architecture for performance and scalability.
    • Experience with native iOS and/or Android development, especially with integrating native modules in React Native.
    • Strong product instincts and proven ability to deliver AI-enhanced experiences, such as intelligent chat, real-time personalization or adaptive UI flows.
    • Experience leveraging AI development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.) to accelerate frontend development cycles and improve code quality.
    • Familiar with backend webserver frameworks like Django or Flask.
    • Experience operating in hybrid onshore/offshore teams and improving engineering maturity in regulated domains.
    • Comfortable working in a player/coach capacity—mentoring and managing while remaining hands-on for key initiatives.
    • SF based is a plus!
