Job Description

The Associate Director, Legal Operations is a leadership role focused on transforming legal processes, technology adoption, and knowledge management within AbbVie’s Legal Department. This role will drive cross-functional initiatives that improve efficiency, reduce risk, and modernize legal workflows through automation and AI-driven solutions.

The ideal candidate has deep legal operations expertise, a strategic mindset, and experience leading process improvement initiatives. This role requires influencing senior leadership, collaborating with IT and finance partners, and ensuring high adoption of technology-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Operations Strategy – Drive process optimization for both operational and substantive legal workflows to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Workflow Automation – Identify and implement AI and automation solutions to streamline manual legal tasks, reducing administrative burden and improving speed and accuracy.
  • Knowledge Management – Spearhead systemic improvements to centralize legal data, enhance knowledge retrieval, and improve collaboration to reduce redundant work and institutionalize best practices.
  • Technology Leadership – Evaluate, deploy, and optimize legal tech tools, ensuring seamless integration into existing legal workflows and compatibility with existing toolkit (including, e.g., iManage, Microsoft Power Platform, Passport, and custom-built solutions).
  • AI & Innovation Strategy – Execute the roadmap for AI adoption across AbbVie Legal by overseeing the full lifecycle of technology implementations – from use case development to onboarding and maintenance – using disciplined, results-driven methodologies.
  • Change Management & Adoption – Develop training, policies, and tailored best practices to ensure high adoption of new tools, influencing legal teams to embrace process and technology improvements.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration – Partner with legal leadership, IT, Finance, and Compliance to align legal operations initiatives with broader business objectives.
  • Outside Counsel & Spend Management – Improve invoice review, legal spend analytics, and budgeting workflows to enhance cost control and improve outside counsel collaborations.
  • Compliance & Risk Mitigation – Ensure legal processes align with global compliance requirements, reducing operational and regulatory risk.
  • Performance Measurement – Define and track KPIs to assess the impact of legal operations initiatives, continuously optimizing for efficiency and cost savings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in a related field; MBA or JD preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in legal operations, legal technology, or business process improvement within a law firm or corporate legal setting.
  • Proven leadership experience managing cross-functional initiatives and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Strong expertise in project management, change management, and legal process optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with legal tech tools (e.g., e-billing, matter management, knowledge management platforms).
  • Experience implementing AI-driven tools for contract analysis, legal research, or invoice analytics.
  • Ability to translate legal business needs into scalable, tech-enabled solutions.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement, communication, and leadership skills.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
